**SENTENCE COMBINATION, Jan. 31st, 2013**

Learning to combine ideas into more complex sentences is an important skill in writing. There are many ways to do this--many possible bonus points! Combine the following three sentences.

Sentence 1: The snowfall lay heavily on the ground.
Sentence 2: People were shovelling driveways and sidewalks and piling up snow into snow mountains.
Sentence 3: There was little traffic on the roads until the snow ploughs had cleared the major routes.

The snowfall lay heavily on the ground and people were shovelling driveways, sidewalks and pilling up snow into snow mountains, at that time there was little traffic on the roads until the snow ploughs had cleared the major routes.

There was little traffic on the roads and people were shovelling the heavy snowfall that lay on the ground away from their driveways and sidewalks; they were piling up snow into snow mountains while waiting for the snow ploughs to clear the major routes.

The snowfall lay heavily on the ground, and there was little traffic on the roads; that´s why people were shovelling driveways and sidewalks and piling up snow into snow mountains while waiting for the snow ploughs to clear the major routes.

The snowfall lay heavily on the ground as people were shovelling driveways, sidewalks, and piling up snow into snow mountains; there was little traffic on the roads until the snow ploughs cleared the major routes.

OR

The snowfall laid heavily on the ground; people shovelled driveways, sidewalks, piled up snow into snow mountains, and hardly any traffic on the roads until the snow ploughs cleared the major routes.

People were shovelling driveways and sidewalks and piling up snow into snow mountains because the snowfall lay heavily on the ground; there was little traffic on the roads until the snow ploughs had cleared the major routes.

SARA: You need to give this one some more thought. I don't know what you mean by "made that little traffic"; also check the punctuation.
RUFUS: The first one is excellent--there are grammatical problems with the 2nd one.
ALEXEY: A good answer:-)
